Here comes a short summary of a fascinating kimono exhibition that I saw in Gothenburg.
Original pieces from the 1600s to modern day creative versions (privately owned ones as well) were on display. A very impressive collection!
The purple kimono with a skeleton pattern (see picture) made the strongest impression on me. Apparently, it dates back to the 1730s and was likely worn by someone in the samurai class. Exciting to see examples on how even the non-traditional morbid art during the Edo Period made its way into kimonos commissioned for the high society. Probably influenced by the norm-breaking Ukiyo lifestyle (浮世 - the floating world), which also was one of the topics in the exhibition.
